Bohol dairy recoups P400K
investment after 5 months
TAGBILARAN CITY, October 25 (PIA)--In agriculture, you can hardly get a full return of investments in five months.
But members of the Bohol Dairy Producers Association (BODPA) recovered its initial investment of P400,000.00, within the first five months of operations, declared Philippine Carabao Center director Dr. Caro Salcez.
"BODPA last year, in [its] 5 months [of] operation has shared profits of around P400,000.00 or about 100% of their investment, to its members, Dr. Salcez announced, to the delight of dairy farmers who also acknowledged the center director's news with a thundering applause.
During the 2nd Dairy Festival held at the Farmers' Training Center at the Ubay Stock Farm in barangay Lomangog, again Dr Salcez broke the house down when he bared the ambitious bid to make Bohol the region's dairy capital.
The next milestone was to gather as much as 2,000 liters of milk daily from its milking carabaos now dispersed to poor households in Bohol towns.
The move, when it rolls is expected to get more and more Boholano farm families committing to the daily income proposition as promised by a well kept milking carabao in the shed.
At the first Dairy Festival, Bohol's wish of cornering the huge dairy market which the country started with a plan to get a share of the milk market which New Zealand and the America supplied to the Philippines.
At the Festival, PCC officials recalled the achievement of hitting the goal of 1000 liters a day of dairy production at the first Dairy Festival, a feat now kept by BODPA.
In its operations. Dr Salcez said BODPA has generated at least P8 million in sales as the dairy sector in Bohol generated a net sales of over P13 million.
PCC Sales outlets, including those stores and malls where the now becoming famous Chocobao: a carabao milk chocolate drink is slowly becoming a byword in tourism, also reports over P5 million in sales, PCC sources said.
Earlier, Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto, in his support to the local dairy as a poverty alleviation tool, signed an executive order mandating the serving of chocobao and local dairy to arriving guests as a welcome drink.
At the Festival, dairy authorities told Bohol dairy farmers that picking up the alternative livelihood in dairy has already an assured market in the dairy processing industry and the remaining 30-50% of production is also used for the local Gatas sa Eskwelahan nutritional feeding program.
Chatto, in his message to the famers call the carabao milk the ultimate food for kids and beats the champorado and other nutritional feeding supplements.
Other then the initial list of Bohol schools which uses the carabao milk for their feeding programs, 10 new schools are in the new list according Provincial Veterinarian Dr Stella Marie Lapiz through Nice Torreon.
And to further encourage families into the new livelihood, PCC has proposed the increase in milk buying price from P45 per liter to P50.00, which also assures BODPA the profitability with estimated return of investment at 20%. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)
