Bien Unido hosts Tour
De Cebu first pit stop

TAGBILARAN CITY, October 15, (PIA)— It was supposed to be where sports self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) enthusiasts converge.

But on October 13, vintage car owners took Bien Unido, Bohol as their pit stop, a screeching success of the town in bringing in potential investments and showcase the small town where people have big hearts.

An identified destination in the Tour De Cebu, a 1000 kilometers historic rally across the Visayas by vintage car owners, Bien Unido took the dare of hosting the region’s rich and famous car collectors.

And the arrival of the motorists around 2:00 PM virtually transformed the dive camp parking lot into a vintage car lot motor show field.

Also a jump-off mecca for religious dive enthusiasts aiming to make an underwater pilgrimage to the sunken Santo Nino and the image of the Lady of Lourdes in the seas in Banacon Double Barrier Reef, the dive center took off another role.

This time, it hosted the 32 vintage cars and their owners, over 10 support vehicles and curious well-wishers who have seen these cars only in the movies.

Mayor Gisella Boniel, personally welcomed the group which was joined by fashion icon Michelle Lhuillier, furniture artist Kenneth Cobonpue, Jay and Jonathan Aldeguers of Island Souvenirs fame and the who’s who rich and the famous across the Visayas.

The newly elected town chief spread a showcase of her town’s courtesy in a banquet of oysters, crabs and native snacks which the visiting group also enjoyed.

The mayor who was visibly elated by the visit, urged everyone to feel at home, a call she hoped would usher in the engagement to her plan of making the town the hot-air balloon capital of Bohol.

Boniel, a full pledged test pilot and commercial airliner aviator said the vast flat lands in her town is not only ideal, the nearby Ubay Airport is less than 10 kilometers away.

Like vintage cars, hot air balloon is a leisure of the rich and the moneyed, a distinction most affluent people would willingly venture on.

That day, Bien Unido divecamp parking lot easily gathered a total of over a billion worth of old cars kept to the prime by the meticulous care and attention of a closed group of can enthusiasts.

Showing they can still be a force to contend with the modern computerized and streamlined designed cars were the favorites of the 1940s to 1980s.

Some of the cars include a 1965 GTO Pontiac with the Edelbrock aluminum engine block American muscle car, several Porsche 911 top down, Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Spyder, two modernized three-wheeler vintage British Morgans, an Alfa Romeo, 1965 Shelby Cobra, Datsun 240Z, Corvettes, a fleet of Mercedes Benzes, British MG, Jaguar, Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, TR6 and still several equally old collection.

Tour De Cebu in their Bohol sojourn is a 3 day touring which includes pit stops in Tubigon, Bien Unido, Panglao, Jagna, Trinidad, Carmen, Sagbayan while driver owners and crew stay at the Be Grand where they cruise out every day. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)

The roar was unmistakable: the purring sound of a thirty cats sound asleep filled the Bien Unido Divecamp as the Tour De Cebu drivers and crew gunned their engines in a bid of farewell to a small town whose people showed big hearts. (rac/PIA-7/Bohol)
